BYU has continued its pursuit of a starting big man through the summer. The program is currently focused on recruiting prospect Caleb Ourigou and Australian forward David Okwera, though various factors including NCAA eligibility rulings may influence the final roster decisions.
Caleb Ourigou, a 2027 prospect who may reclassify to the 2026 class, visited BYU on June 24 and 25. While Ourigou previously visited Kentucky, Arkansas, and UConn, sources indicated that the recruitment has been a competition between BYU and Arkansas. After his visit to BYU, the program reportedly made a strong impression, though Arkansas was later perceived to be back in the driver's seat. Ourigou may wait until after the Peach Jam AAU event to make a commitment. BYU's ability to land Ourigou may depend on the acquisition of other big men.
The program is also making a strong push for David Okwera, a 6-foot-10 forward/center who has played five seasons in Australia's National Basketball League. Okwera, who plays for Australia's national team, faces potential eligibility questions due to the NCAA's new age-based model. Because Okwera turns 24 on July 31, his eligibility depends on a first-of-its-kind ruling. A similar player, Ben Henshall, was cleared by the NCAA after his NBL contract was found to be under the required threshold. On the court, Okwera is described by a scout as having a guard-like game in a forward/center body capable of playing in the Big 12 or SEC. Last season with the Perth Wildcats, he averaged 5.3 points and 3.2 rebounds in 11.6 minutes.
In addition to Okwera, BYU has remained in contact with 7-foot-5 big man Xu Xin. The recruitment of these players is interconnected; for instance, if Okwera is ruled ineligible, it could increase BYU's pursuit of Ourigou. The program continues to seek skilled big men capable of shooting and playing effectively in the pick and roll.
