An NWS damage assessment team identified a destructive thunderstorm and wind event in Lynndyl, Utah, according to a public information statement from the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City. The survey found evidence of straight-line winds reaching estimated peak speeds of 100 mph and significant damage from wind-driven hail.
The storm event occurred on August 29, 2026, beginning near the northwest side of Lynndyl and ending near Leamington in Millard County. During the event, 34 empty rail cars were blown over toward the east-southeast. Homes in Lynndyl sustained damage to siding, windows, and roofs on west-facing sides due to wind-driven hail. The storm also stripped trees and vegetation of leaves and caused several uprooted or snapped hardwood trees.
In addition to wind damage, wind-driven hail caused significant impact. A corn field near the south and east of town saw stalks snapped, bent, and laid flat from west to east. The survey noted a damage swath approximately 17.42 miles long and 2 miles wide. While exact hail size measurements were unknown, observations showed the largest hail was near the size of golf balls.
The assessment team noted indicators consistent with a significant microburst event involving downward and outward wind patterns. Damage included a flattened metal carport, a destroyed pole barn, and several free-standing power poles that were blown down. The survey reported one injury from the event, with no fatalities recorded.
