Timpview High School Sterling Scholar Information 2026–27

The purpose of the Sterling Scholar Awards, sponsored by Deseret Morning News and KSL Television, is to publicly recognize and encourage excellence in scholarship, leadership, and citizenship among high school seniors in Utah public high schools. It is a great honor to be chosen to represent Timpview High School as a Sterling Scholar.

Important Dates

Tuesday, September 8: Sterling Scholar applications become available on the Timpview High School website and social media.

Tuesday, September 22, at 2:30 p.m.: Completed applications are due to Mrs. Van Orden in room N123.

September 24–October 8: Sterling Scholar interviews will be held.

Friday, October 9: Sterling Scholar winners and alternates will be announced on the school website and social media.

Who Is Eligible?

The Sterling Scholar Awards are open to Utah public high school seniors who will graduate with their class in May 2027. Each high school may nominate one student in each of the following 14 categories:

Business and Marketing

Computer Technology

Dance

English

Family and Consumer Sciences

Instrumental Music

Mathematics

Science

Skilled and Technical Sciences Education

Social Science

Speech/Theater

Vocal Music

Visual Arts

World Language

Application and Selection Process

Sterling Scholar applications will be available on the Timpview High School website and social media beginning Tuesday, September 8.

Sterling Scholar Application

Completed applications are due to Mrs. Van Orden in room N123 by 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22.

Timpview Sterling Scholars will be selected by category chairs based on each student’s application and interview. After the application deadline, applicants must contact the appropriate category chair listed below to schedule an interview.

Candidates will be evaluated in five areas, with each area receiving equal weight:

General Scholarship: 20%

Category Scholarship: 20%

Leadership: 20%

Community Service and Citizenship: 20%

Interview: 20%

Interviews will be held from September 24 through October 8. Sterling Scholar winners and alternates will be announced Friday, October 9, on the school website and social media.

What Can Selected Students Expect?

Each Timpview Sterling Scholar will create a portfolio showcasing the student’s scholarship, leadership, and service.

The Sterling Scholar committee will release portfolio deadlines and interview schedules in late fall. Timpview Sterling Scholar meeting dates and deadlines will also be provided after candidates are selected.

All meetings are mandatory, and all deadlines are absolute.

Mrs. Van Orden is the Sterling Scholar coordinator for Timpview High School and will support students throughout the process.
