The Salt Lake City Council scheduled a public hearing for Tuesday, September 15, 2026, to consider adopting an ordinance that would amend the city code regarding police use of automatic license plate reader (ALPR) systems, according to a September 1 notice.
The proposed ordinance seeks to amend Chapter 2.10 of the Salt Lake City Code to create a regulatory framework for the police department's use of ALPR systems and data. The framework would govern the use, access, retention, sharing, training, security, and auditing of these systems, according to the notice.
The hearing is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be held via electronic means and in person at Salt Lake City Hall, located at 451 South State Street, Room 315. Members of the public may participate in person or via Zoom.
The Salt Lake City Council Office stated that the public can provide comments by calling a 24-hour comment line at 801-535-7654 or by emailing council.comments@slc.gov. All comments received will be shared with the Council and added to the public record.
People with disabilities may request reasonable accommodations, such as alternate formats or interpreters, by contacting the City Council Office at least two business days in advance. Requests can be made via email, phone, or relay service 711.
