Utah Valley University will close its operations on Sept. 10, 2026, the one-year anniversary of the assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk, according to a university email sent to students. The decision comes after the university withdrew from plans to co-host a memorial service with Turning Point USA on the grounds where Kirk was killed on Sept. 10, 2025.
Withdrawal From Memorial Plans
The university's decision to shutter operations on the anniversary marks a significant shift from earlier discussions regarding a commemorative event. According to The Cougar Chronicle, UVU had previously been in discussions with the national leadership of Turning Point USA to host a joint memorial service on the same campus where Kirk was fatally shot. However, the university reportedly reversed its position and ceased communications with the organization, leaving TPUSA to search for a new location with just over a month remaining before the anniversary.
Tensions With TPUSA
The sudden reversal by the university has reportedly caused frustration within Turning Point USA. As The Cougar Chronicle reported, plans for a joint event had been progressing smoothly for several months before the university's late-stage interruption. While the university's recent email to students referred to the date as commemorating "the tragic events surrounding the death of Charlie Kirk," critics have noted that the phrasing avoids the term assassination.
Service Project Instead of Memorial
In lieu of a memorial service, UVU told students it would encourage participation in the United Way's annual Day of Caring. This service project is a recurring event that UVU sponsors alongside Brigham Young University and Nu Skin Enterprises, rather than a new initiative created specifically for the Kirk anniversary. This move has faced criticism from those who believe the university has been unwilling to honor Kirk's legacy, citing the university's previous choice of Sharon McMahon—a known critic of Kirk—to speak at the 2026 commencement ceremony.
The Memorial Committee
The controversy follows a long-term effort to address the legacy of the assassination. Following the killing of Kirk on Sept. 10, 2025, UVU formed a memorial committee to develop a long-term plan. The committee was co-chaired by Scott M. Smith, chair of the UVU Board of Trustees and co-founder of Qualtrics, and Amanda Covington, chair of the Utah Board of Higher Education. The committee was designed to include students, political leaders, and other key stakeholders to ensure community voices were heard.
Community Input Efforts
The original memorial committee was established to handle the outpouring of support and suggestions received from students, faculty, staff, and national business leaders following the tragedy. At the time of its formation in late September 2025, committee co-chairs emphasized a commitment to approaching the process with thoughtfulness and respect, aiming to coordinate with the family of Charlie Kirk and local officials to develop an appropriate long-term plan.
The 2025 Assassination
Charlie Kirk was assassinated on Sept. 10, 2025, while speaking at an outdoor campus debate at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Kirk, a prominent right-wing political activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was killed by a sniper positioned on a nearby rooftop while addressing approximately 3,000 people. The incident occurred during a tour titled the "American Comeback Tour."
Investigation and Charges-
The perpetrator of the sniper attack was identified as Tyler James Robinson, a 22-year-old from Washington, Utah. Robinson surrendered to local authorities the following day after his parents reportedly convinced him to do so. He was charged with 10 counts, including aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing bodily injury, and obstruction of justice. Prosecutors indicated the attack was politically motivated.
