Did you know that Timpanogos Elementary has a “Flag Patrol”? Every year, students from Fifth Grade learn about the proper raising and lowering the flag, and complete that service each day. Miss Staten, our DLI English 5th Grade teacher, takes time each week to teach the students assigned to flag patrol the proper handling of the flag, and the special conditions that control how a flag is raised each day. Last week, they learned about “half staff” status of the flag on August 25, 2026, when a presidential action was announced to honor the memory of global icon/humanitarian Dolly Parton, upon her passing on August 25, 2026. The flag was also flown at half-staff on “Patriot Day” (September 11), to honor the bravery and sacrifice of First Responders, brave citizens, and military members who lost their lives during terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Many students at Timpanogos learned about the tragic events of that day 25 years ago. Patriot Day is also known as “National Day of Service and Remembrance”.
These are some basic rules for raising and lowering the US flag. The most important rule to remember is to always treat the US flag with dignity and respect. It is the symbol of the United States of America. Students at Timpanogos Elementary are taught to honor the memory of the many men and women who have given their lives defending the liberty and freedom this “Stars & Stripes”, our American flag, represents.
