The site for the Coeur d’Alene Idaho Temple has been staked in preparation for preliminary site and utility work, according to an announcement from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on July 7, 2026. The development marks a transition into the early construction phases for the new house of worship.
Temple Site and Specifications
The Church announced that the temple site is currently being prepared for upcoming utility and site work. This progress follows the official release of the temple's exterior rendering to the public on November 10, 2025.
The planned structure will be located at the corner of Hanley Avenue and Coeur Terre Boulevard in Coeur d’Alene. The project involves a single-story temple with an approximate total floor area of 29,63 and square feet, which will also include a meetinghouse and an accompanying ancillary building.
Architectural Features
The temple site encompasses 10.91 acres, or roughly 4.4 hectares. Architectural plans for the facility include a single attached central spire.
Inside the structure, the floor plan will feature two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry. The site sits at an elevation of 2,273 feet.
Initial Announcement Details
The project was first announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the 194th Semiannual General Conference on October 6, 2024. During that address, President Nelson revealed plans for 17 new temples, including Coeur d’Alene.
At the time of the announcement, the Church noted that Coeur d’Alene has a population exceeding 50,000 people and is situated in northern Idaho. The facility will serve as the tenth announced temple for the state of Idaho.
Idaho Temple History
The Coeur d’Alene Temple joins a growing number of temples in Idaho. Other existing or announced temples in the state include the Boise, Burley, Idaho Falls, Meridian, Montpelier, Pocatello, Rexburg, Teton River, and Twin Falls temples.
Idaho is home to more than 475,000 members of the Church across over 1,200 congregations. The state also holds historical significance for the faith, as early pioneers settled in Idaho in 1855, and several Church presidents, including Harold B. Lee, Ezra Taft Benson, and Howard W. Hunter, were natives of the state.
Religious Significance and Context
During his October 2024 address, President Nelson emphasized the importance of temple worship in preparing for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. He described the building of temples at an unprecedented pace as a way to help gather Israel.
President Nelson also provided updates on other major Church projects, noting that the preservation and renovation work on the Salt Lake Temple and other areas on Temple Square had been underway for nearly five years, with projections at that time suggesting completion by the end of 2026.
Future Milestones
While preliminary site work is underway, the Church has scheduled a groundbreaking ceremony for August 29, 2026. Following the completion of construction, the Church is preparing for a public open house to begin on September 10, 2026.
