LaVerkin city officials identified Miles Mitchell as the paraglider who died after making contact with power lines in a Southern Utah canyon. The incident took place Thursday just after 5:45 p.m. while traveling through Confluence Park.
The contact with power lines caused the parachute to collapse, resulting in Mitchell falling to the canyon floor. First responders from various agencies arrived at the scene and attempted life-saving measures, but were unsuccessful. Mitchell was declared dead at the scene.
City officials stated that the family had been notified of the death and was receiving support from local authorities. Officials noted that while the investigation remains ongoing, all evidence suggests the event was a tragic accident.
The power lines involved in the accident were located west of the LaVerkin Bridge at Confluence Park, which is situated within the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve in Washington County.
