The Murray City School Board held a meeting to officially swear in Brian Ipson as the new Business Administrator for the Murray City School District. During the meeting, the board also moved forward with several motions regarding proposed school boundary changes scheduled to take effect for the 2027-2028 school year.
Salt Lake County Clerk Lannie Chapman administered the oath of office for Brian Ipson, who has been working full-time in the role since August 1. The board unanimously approved a resolution granting Ipson the rights, powers, and duties of the position as provided in the Utah Code. This follows the service of outgoing Business Administrator Richard Reese.
In relation to the consideration of Liberty Elementary School for closure, the board issued initial notices for several boundary changes. Proposed changes include:
Students residing west of 700 West along Winchester Street would move from Longview Elementary to Grant Elementary.
Students residing east of I-15 to State Street, between 5900 South and the southern boundary of the district, would move from Liberty Elementary to Longview Elementary.
Students residing east of I-15 to State Street, between 5300 South and 5900 South, would move from Liberty Elementary to McMillan Elementary.
Students residing north of 4500 South, between Brick Oven Way and the northern and eastern boundaries of the district, would move from Liberty Elementary to Parkside Elementary.
Regarding middle school assignments, students attending Longview, McMillan, and Parkside Elementary would attend Hillcrest Middle School, while students attending Grant, Horizon, and Viewmont Elementary would attend Riverview Middle School, starting in the 2027-2028 school year.
The Murray Education Foundation reported that a back to school supply drive with Fox 13 News raised nearly $10,000. The foundation also noted that funds from the previous holiday season's Giving Machines are being used to assemble backpacks and supplies, as well as to seed a dental hygiene pilot program providing preventative dental services in Murray schools.
Board President Kelly Taeoalii noted that the public will have opportunities to provide input on the proposed changes. A public hearing is scheduled for October 1 at 6:00 p.m. at Liberty Elementary School, with additional public comment opportunities at the October 15 and November 12 board meetings.
