The Murray City School Board held a regular meeting on January 15, 2026, at the district office to address several items ranging from school construction updates to upcoming legislative concerns. The session included reports from staff, board members, and various educational organizations.
During the meeting, the board unanimously approved the consent agenda, which included the approval of minutes from December 2025, financial reports, and the renewal of Superintendent Jennifer Covington's contract for the period of July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2028.
Updates on bond projects were provided by Scott Taggart, Director of Auxiliary Services. Taggart stated that the addition to Murray High School is progressing on schedule, with structural work occurring on the second and third floors and interior work beginning on the first floor. He noted the structure should be dried in within 10 days.
Work at Riverview Junior High School is also reported to be on schedule. The tilt-up panels are complete, and masonry work has moved into the arts and commons areas.
Board members shared reflections from the recent USBA Conference. Kelly Taeoalii noted that all MCSD participants completed their Master Board Certification but expressed that the upcoming legislative session may create a difficult budget year. Other board members, including Jill Weight and Elizabeth Payne, discussed their attendance at the conference and highlighted sessions regarding legal issues and student school board members.
Various community and school organizations provided updates during the meeting. Lisa Sheffield, Riverview Junior High PTA President, spoke about social activities for students including a science fair and spelling bee. The Foundation Director, Doug Perry, reported that the Giving Machines were successful and announced an upcoming Pickleball Tournament scheduled for late January 2026.
Additionally, Assistant Superintendent Wihongi presented a first reading of an updated policy regarding standards for the acceptance and reciprocity of credits earned by students, which included new language regarding the State Online Education Program.
