Gregory F. Peterson, Ed.D., has been selected as the 9th president of Salt Lake Community College following an extensive nationwide search. The announcement was made by the Utah Board of Higher Education and the Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) Board of Trustees.
Dr. Peterson will succeed Dr. Deneece G. Huftalin, who announced her retirement in fall 2023 after serving more than 10 years as president of SLCC.
Dr. Peterson brings a background in student affairs and instructional programs, having worked at urban, suburban, and rural community colleges. Since July 1, 2018, he has served as president at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.
His professional experience includes leading efforts in student learning and success for over 100,000 students. His work has involved developing transfer partnerships, college promise programs, and launching the first community college Artificial Intelligence program in the nation. Dr. Peterson has also worked with industry partners and community leaders to strengthen workforce pipelines.
Dr. Peterson holds a doctorate in educational administration with an emphasis in community college leadership from the University of Texas at Austin. He earned a master's degree in postsecondary, adult and continuing education from Portland State University and a bachelor's degree in English from Brigham Young University.
The presidential search committee was co-led by Brady Southwick, chair of the SLCC Board of Trustees, and Sharon Eubank from the Utah Board of Higher Education.
Dr. Peterson's recent recognitions include being named an Aspen New President Fellow and being recognized as the East Valley Man of the Year by Positive Paths.
