The Murray City School District has reported that major construction projects funded by a $125 million bond approved by voters in November 2024 are currently proceeding on time and within budget. The projects include the rebuilding of Riverview Junior High School and the addition of a classroom wing at Murray High School.
As these infrastructure improvements progress, the district is also preparing for a significant grade reconfiguration set to take place during the 2027-2028 school year. Under this plan, current fourth graders will move into sixth grade at middle schools, such as Hillcrest or Riverview, while current seventh graders will transition into ninth grade at Murray High School.
In addition to construction updates, the Murray City School District Board of Education is evaluating potential school closures and boundary realignments. This evaluation is a response to declining elementary enrollment, which the district attributes to rising housing costs and falling birth rates in Utah.
The Board is utilizing a data-informed approach to consider factors such as school proximity, driving and walking distances, neighborhood cohesion, and major transportation corridors. A stated priority of this process is to maintain balanced enrollment across the district while preserving established neighborhoods whenever possible.
The construction of both Riverview Junior High School and the Murray High School expansion is scheduled for completion in the spring or summer of 2027, with students expected to occupy the new spaces in August 2027.
For the Riverview Junior High School rebuild, the district is collaborating with Naylor, Wentworth, Lund Architects, Hughes Construction, and BDK. For the Murray High School project, the district is working with VCBO Architects, Hogan Construction, and BDK.
