In a series of notices posted to the Salt Lake City Council District 1 website, several community updates and upcoming events were announced. These updates cover topics ranging from infrastructure projects and city budget adoption to community meetings and food preservation events.
The Salt Lake City Council adopted a $2.1 billion Fiscal Year 2026-27 budget on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. This spending plan focuses on public safety, essential services, neighborhood infrastructure, and financial stewardship.
Regarding infrastructure, a reconstruction and bridge closure project is scheduled to begin on January 5. The 600/700 North area will be closed in both directions between Riverside Drive and 1600 West, with the Jordan River Trail closing between 500 and 800 North. This closure is expected to last through June 2026.
Additionally, the Council approved a request on March 24 to temporarily close streets near the Salt Lake Temple from March to October 2027 to accommodate the temple's reopening.
The Council is also reviewing updates to the Northwest Community Plan, which establishes a 15-year vision for the area's future in connection to Plan Salt Lake.
Other community initiatives mentioned include the West-East Connections Study, intended to improve connectivity between the east and west sides of the city, and a $31 million West Interchange project by Utah DOT and Patriot Rail's Salt Lake, Garfield & Western Railway to reduce congestion on the Westside.
Community members can participate in a hands-on food preservation event called Canned with Care. Furthermore, a Council meeting was scheduled for Sept. 22 at the Utah State Fairpark, Deseret Building on the Westside, with no Zoom option available for that specific meeting.
