The Utah Southern Railroad Depot Museum is scheduled to be open and free to the public for Lehi Heritage Day this Saturday from 2:30-6 p.m., according to a report published August 26. The museum is located at 225 E. State St. and features the authentically restored 1872 train depot, which received a historical marker in 2024.
The museum previously held a soft re-opening on July 25, which attracted more than 250 visitors. Organizers, who are descendants of R. J. Stice, the station master of the Lehi Depot, have worked for many weeks to develop educational exhibits.
During the July 25 event, visitors were able to interact with a telegraph and an educational video regarding Morse Code, which was first used in 1844 by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail. Visitors used the telegraph to transmit their names using the code.
The ticket and baggage room features luggage types from 1872, the year the railroad first reached Lehi from Salt Lake City. Displays include freight, packages, U.S. Mail, and educational posters. A wall display shows the history, restoration, and 2001 dedication of the depot.
The waiting room contains antiques from the era spanning 1872 to 1972 and a video about life in the upstairs area where the station master's family lived. Other exhibits include a model train layout depicting Lehi circa 1905, a scale model of the depot provided by Jim Wanlass, and a life-size 1872 train parlor.
Outside on the track siding, visitors can find an old Lehi Roller Mills grain unloader. The Timpanogos Flute Circle has provided Native American Flute Music on the depot deck.
