Investigators have determined that a compost pile at Utah State University ignited the Logan's Canyon Road Fire, which broke out on Aug. 25, 2026. The determination follows several days of investigation into the cause of the blaze.
Challenge Course Status
The fire, which began on Aug. 25, 2026, occurred during a period of transition for campus recreation facilities. The Utah State University High Elements Challenge Course was listed as permanently closed as of Aug. 25, 2026, although the university continued to offer outdoor team-building activities.
Summer Programming Changes
According to university records from Aug. 25, 2026, the High Elements Challenge Course was no longer available for use, though outdoor team-building remained an option. The university had previously issued a notice stating that team building and a portable wall would not be available during the summer of 2026.
Composting Program Overview
The university's composting program, a joint venture between Dining Services and Facilities, has been operational since January 2015. Supported by a Student Sustainability Grant, the program utilizes an EF-12 Earth Flow Composting System from Green Mountain Technologies to process organic waste.
Waste Processing Details
The composting system processes approximately 32 tons of food annually. The feedstock is sourced from various campus locations, including the two large dining hall kitchens, the Nutrition, Dietetics and Food Science kitchen, the Edith Bowen Elementary Lab School, the greenhouse, and wood chips from tree pruning.
Compost Composition
The composting process follows a 21-day cycle and includes wood chips and food scraps like fruit, vegetables, and bread. To manage the process, landscape operations increased the food-to-bulk material ratio, which also helped increase the total food capacity of the system.
Operational Requirements
The composting operation requires maintenance and loading for up to 20 hours per week. While the system uses a biofilter to assist with odor control, the composter itself is not independently metered for electricity, though the fan runs continuously to support the process.
Historical Composting Efforts
The university has previously managed both pre-consumer and post-consumer composting initiatives. While past post-consumer projects were discontinued due to student graduation and contamination, a pilot project for a compost drop-off was launched in spring 2018.
