A 39-year-old woman from Preston, Idaho, has been sentenced to jail and probation for assaulting a family member and causing severe injuries. According to court records, Shannon Leigh Karpowich was sentenced in Logan's 1st District Court after pleading guilty to aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury and kidnapping, both second-degree felonies.
The incident occurred following an argument regarding loud music in a garage. According to police reports, after a request to lower the music, Karpowich punched a 46-year-old man in the face. The victim stated that co-defendant Kelly G. Olson and another unidentified woman held him down while Karpowich continued punching him in the face and groin. The victim was then shoved over a table.
The victim, who was recovering from back surgeries and a broken foot, was transported to a local hospital. Medical professionals determined he sustained three broken ribs and groin bruises. During the investigation, Karpowich reportedly admitted to the assault but showed no remorse, claiming her brother had been the aggressor and had choked her.
During the sentencing hearing on Feb. 2, Karpowich was ordered to serve 90 days in jail followed by 48 months of probation. The court also ordered her to complete an anger management course, undergo substance abuse and mental health treatment, and have no contact with the victim.
Court records indicate that Olson has been charged with first-degree felony aggravated kidnapping and second-degree felony aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury. Olson has pleaded not guilty and was scheduled to appear in court on March 16.
