The Town of Bluff, Utah, has been officially designated an International Dark Sky Community by DarkSky International, according to a report published August 10. This designation places Bluff among a prestigious group of Dark Sky Places globally that are committed to preserving the night sky for future generations.
DarkSky International is a global non-profit organization that works to reduce light pollution through education, outreach, and lighting policy. Light pollution has been shown to affect human health, disrupt ecosystems, waste energy, and block views of the universe.
Bluff is positioned as a hub for skywatchers due to its proximity to four International Dark Sky Parks: Natural Bridges National Monument, Hovenweep National Monument, Goosenecks State Park, and Canyonlands National Park (Needles District). This cluster of Dark Sky Places makes southeastern Utah one of the premier locations in the country to experience a dark night sky.
