Real Monarchs fought to a 0-0 draw against Minnesota United FC 2 on September 15 in Herriman, Utah. The match, which was the penultimate game of the season for the Monarchs, resulted in a 4-3 shootout loss for the home side, giving the visitors an extra point.
Head Coach Mark Lowry implemented three changes to the starting lineup for the match, including the first professional start for Rylan Hashimoto, an RSL Academy product. Handwalla Bwana also made his debut for the Real Monarchs during the match, entering as a substitute in the 80th minute. Bwana joined the club on loan from Las Vegas Nights earlier this month and will remain with the team through the end of the 2026 MLS NEXT Pro season.
In the first half, Owen Anderson nearly opened the scoring for the Monarchs when a shot rattled the crossbar in the 39th minute. Minnesota United FC 2 had an opportunity to lead in the second half when Jordan Adebayo-Smith missed a contested shot on an open net. The Monarchs also saw a shot from Utah native Zach Lifferth saved by Kayne Rizvanovich in the 68th minute.
Following a scoreless 90 minutes, the game proceeded to a shootout. Minnesota United FC 2 secured the win after misses from Ruben Mesalles and Izzy Amparo.
The Real Monarchs will conclude their 2026 MLS NEXT Pro campaign at home against Ventura County FC on Sunday, September 20, at Zions Bank Stadium. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. MT.
