A garbage truck caught fire in St. George on a Monday afternoon, causing smoke to billow and requiring traffic to be rerouted. The incident occurred on 1000 East, situated between St. George Boulevard and Red Hills Parkway.
St. George Fire Battalion Chief Tyler Talbot stated the fire began in the engine compartment after the vehicle experienced a mechanical issue. The fire caused the truck to shut off while being driven and spread from the engine compartment into the cab. Firefighters from the St. George Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the flames. No injuries were reported, and the driver was able to exit the vehicle safely.
The St. George Police Department rerouted traffic near a nearby Denny's toward Highland Drive during the incident.
