Nearly all of Washington County in southern Utah is without power following a widespread outage that began late Thursday afternoon, according to a report published August 27.
Rocky Mountain Power indicated that over 6,548 customers in St. George and surrounding areas are without power. Additionally, Dixie Power reported that 30,267 customers are without power within the Dixie area coverage.
The cause of the outage remains unknown. The City of St. George stated on social media that they believe the issue lies with Pacific Corps and that their energy services team is working on the matter.
The St. George Police Department confirmed that the outages are causing an increase in traffic accidents. By 8:29 p.m., ten accidents had been reported since the afternoon, which is an increase from the typical two or three accidents reported on a Thursday.
Authorities are asking residents not to call 911 regarding the outage unless there is an actual emergency. Drivers are advised to treat non-functioning traffic signals as four-way stops.
