The Provo City School District was recognized as one of 10 districts in the state where students perform at higher levels than their zip codes and family circumstances might suggest. Superintendent Dau credited this to the district's education system and a partnership between teachers, students, and parents.
Regarding school safety and administration, the Superintendent noted that kindergarten teachers started the school year last week. The district is working to even out class sizes and requested that parents update their contact information on PowerSchool to ensure accurate emergency notifications. Parents were also reminded to complete the online registration process to provide permissions for school climate surveys and directory information.
The Superintendent addressed new legislation concerning food additives. While parents are permitted to bring food items containing certain dyes or additives into schools, there are restrictions on what teachers, schools, and donations can provide. Specific details regarding these restrictions have been sent to parents via email.
Additionally, the Elementary Dual Language Immersion Committee has begun meeting. Comprised of parents from every elementary school in the district, the committee aims to provide the school board with feedback regarding DLI programming and its impact on students. The district has hired a research group to assist in reaching out to more parents, teachers, and community stakeholders to ensure equitable service for both DLI and non-DLI students.
Looking ahead to September, the district noted that the month will observe American Founders and Constitution Month, with the Freedom Festival offering various school involvement opportunities. The Superintendent concluded by encouraging parents to maintain a daily reading habit with their children to support district-wide reading initiatives.
