The Sawmill Fire in Iron County has reached 100% containment after burning 3,790 acres near Steamboat Mountain, according to a July 7, 2026, report from WildFire Explorer. The blaze, which was caused by lightning, burned through dense pinyon-juniper woodlands north of Beryl and Lund.
Rapid Growth and Spread
The fire ignited around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. While the incident initially involved only 60 acres, it grew rapidly overnight to more than 900 acres due to low humidity, windy conditions, and critically dry vegetation.
Containment and Resources
The total burned area included 3,490 acres of Bureau of Land Management land, 54 acres of private land, and 21 acres of Utah state land. Firefighters worked for approximately two weeks to secure the perimeter using heavy equipment, dozers, hand crews, and engines.
Evacuations and Protection
Aerial support played a significant role in suppression efforts, with helicopters performing bucket drops and Single Engine Air Tankers (SEATs) dropping retardant. During the height of the fire, the Iron County Sheriff's Office issued mandatory evacuation orders for roughly half a dozen cabins and yurts located two to four miles from the fire.
Impact on Infrastructure
No permanent homes or primary structures were destroyed, though local cabins and yurts faced temporary threats. No injuries or fatalities were reported in connection with the fire, and no major highway or infrastructure closures were required during the incident.
Ongoing Fire Risk
While containment is complete, crews continue to monitor for hot spots and conduct post-fire rehabilitation, including aerial seeding and watershed restoration. Stage 1 fire restrictions remain in effect across southern Utah due to extreme fire danger.
