The Great Salt Lake's water level heading into the summer of 2026 remains dependent on spring snowpack runoff, as state hydrologists monitor the shallow basin for potential rises or declines.
The Utah Division of Water Resources noted that the lake's shallow depth, averaging 14 feet, allows water levels to fluctuate dramatically based on annual precipitation. Typically, the lake rises approximately 2 feet during spring snowpack melts, though record snowpack in 2023 caused a much larger rise of 5.5 feet.
Recent years have shown that poor snowpack can limit elevation gains, with the lake rising only about 1 foot in both 2021 and 2022. Low water levels present environmental risks, as exposed lake bed can lead to severe dust pollution containing heavy metals and chemicals, impacting regional air quality.
The National Water and Climate Center continues to provide critical snowpack and precipitation monitoring through the Snow Survey and Water Supply Forecasting Program. This data includes Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) reports and basin-specific measurements used to track hydrologic norms against the 1991-2020 median.
