Weber State University's Communication Department announced July 13, 2026, that it is offering various scholarships and tuition waivers specifically designated for communication majors and students involved in the department's co-curricular activities.
Application Requirements and Process
To qualify for any of the available financial awards, the university stated that students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as well as the Weber State Scholarship Universe application.
When completing the Scholarship Universe application, the department advises students to use the questionnaire section to indicate they wish to be considered specifically for Weber State scholarships. According to department guidelines, answering a higher number of questions in this section may increase the likelihood of being identified for additional scholarship opportunities.
Major and GPA Requirements
Several department-specific scholarships are available to students meeting specific academic or enrollment criteria. The COMM Alumni & Friends Scholarship is open to communication majors or minors who maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA, with eligibility extending to both full-time and part-time students.
The Jonathan Morrell Scholarship provides support for communication majors or minors who demonstrate financial need through the FAFSA process. Applicants for this specific award must be registered as full-time students and hold at least a 3.0 minimum GPA.
Journalism and Editorial Awards
Specialized awards are also available for students working in news media or specific tracks within the department. The Hess Editorial Scholarship is available to non-communication majors who work for The Signpost, provided they have a 3.0 GPA and demonstrate an interest or skill in editorial writing; this award supports both full-time and part-time students.
For those in specialized media tracks, the Jack & Betty Lampros Journalism scholarship is available to communication majors enrolled in the multimedia journalism track. Additionally, the Helen Cortez Stafford Scholarship targets students majoring in journalism or other communication emphases that focus on writing.
Faculty Nomination Process
The Patrick R. Parkinson Scholarship is available to communication majors with declared emphasis areas in multimedia journalism, public relations & strategic communication, or civic advocacy. While the scholarship prefers applicants in the multimedia journalism track, it requires a minimum 2.5 GPA.
Unlike some other awards, demonstrating financial need through FAFSA is preferred but not required for the Parkinson Scholarship. Recipients are nominated by faculty advisors from the Multimedia Journalism, Public Relations & Strategic Communication, and Civic Advocacy programs, with final selections made by the Scholarship Committee.
