The Murray City School District Board of Education has taken procedural steps regarding school boundary realignments following a May 2026 notice concerning the potential closure of Liberty Elementary School for the 2027–2028 school year. During an August 13 meeting, board members unanimously passed motions for initial notices regarding potential boundary adjustments across several district schools to address enrollment shifts caused by rising housing costs and declining birth rates in Salt Lake County.
Proposed boundary adjustments targeted for the 2027–2028 school year include considerations for Grant Elementary, Longview Elementary, McMillan Elementary, and Parkside Elementary. These adjustments involve students currently assigned to Liberty Elementary and Longview Elementary. Regarding middle school alignment, students from Longview, McMillan, and Parkside would attend Hillcrest Middle School, while students from Grant, Horizon, and Viewmont would attend Riverview Middle School.
A public hearing is scheduled for October 1, 2026, at 6:00 PM at Liberty Elementary School. The district plans to release an online interactive address lookup tool for families to view proposed assignments. Additionally, public comment opportunities are available during board meetings on October 15 and November 12, prior to a final board vote scheduled for December 10, 2026.
In other district business, Brian L. Ipson was sworn in as the new Business Administrator. Ipson succeeds Richard Reese, who is set to retire in December. The board also reported on the sale of the district's second tranche of General Obligation bonds, noting that competitive bidding drove the interest rate to approximately 3.99%. Due to efficient project management for capital improvements at Riverview Middle School and Murray High School, the projected average annual property tax impact for homeowners is expected to be under $90, down from previous estimates of $125–$132.
The Murray Education Foundation (MEF) announced a new mobile preventive dental pilot program in collaboration with Salt Lake Community College and the Utah Dental Hygienists Association. This program aims to provide free preventive care and cleanings to uninsured or Medicaid-eligible students. The foundation also reported progress on back-to-school supply drives and the deployment of Giving Machine funds toward classroom grants and student necessities.
The district also confirmed that student meal prices will remain unchanged for the 2026–2027 school year despite a contract amendment with Sodexo America. Meanwhile, construction continues at Murray High School, with recent progress including the installation of a centralized back-up generator, completion of interior work in the new classroom wing, and the installation of ADA-accessible restrooms.
