Real Salt Lake midfielder Juan Manuel Sanabria emerged as a standout performer for Uruguay during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even as his nation failed to advance from group play. Following a 1-0 loss to Spain on Friday night, Uruguay's exit follows previous results including a draw with Cape Verde and a draw against Saudi Arabia.
Sanabria, nicknamed JuanMa, played a significant role in Uruguay's recent matches. After entering the match against Saudi Arabia at halftime to help spark an equalizer, he started the full 90 minutes against Cape Verde and against Spain. During the contest with Spain, Sanabria was tasked with containing the speed of Lamine Yamal.
According to match statistics, Sanabria won seven of nine duels, recorded seven tackles, three clearances, and one interception during the match against Spain. His performance was noted for his poise and ability to minimize the effect of the Spanish attack.
The 26-year-old midfielder currently leads Real Salt Lake with six assists in 11 games during the 2026 MLS campaign. Sanabria joined RSL in January from Liga MX side Atlético San Luis on a permanent transfer for the 2026 and 2027-28 seasons.
Sanabria's recent international history includes several appearances for Uruguay, including scoring his first goal for the senior team against Uzbekistan in October 2025. He was named to the World Cup squad by manager Marco Bielsa nearly a month ago.
As the World Cup concludes, Real Salt Lake players and staff have resumed preseason sessions at the Zions Bank Training Center in Herriman. RSL is scheduled to host Burnley FC at America First Field on July 15 before returning to regular MLS action against Los Angeles Football Club on July 22.
