The Lehi girls volleyball team opened the fall campaign with a close loss to a Thunder squad followed by a sweep of the Titans at home, according to a August 17 report.
In the opening match on August 11, the Pioneers played a marathon match against the Thunder. Lehi lost the first game 23-25 but won the next two 25-13 and 25-22 to take the advantage. The visitors rallied to take the fourth set 25-23 and won the match by winning the tiebreaker game 15-10.
Junior outside hitter Aliya Shewell led the Lehi effort with 16 kills, a team-high 18 digs and 27 serve-receives. Sophomore middle blocker Laken Bell added 12 kills, four aces, three combined blocks and 14 digs. Junior middle blocker Alea Tauai provided 12 kills, two aces, 13 digs and 27 serve-receives. Junior middle blocker Lucy Lowe led in blocks with four combined and four kills.
Junior setter Aftyn Hurst recorded four aces and 13 digs. Sophomore setter Pais Brems tallied 40 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore setter Isabel Garcia contributed 10 digs and seven serve-receives.
On August 13, the Pioneers defeated the Titans 3-0 with set scores of 25-22, 27-25, and 25-16.
Shewell recorded 17 kills, two aces, three block-assists and nine serve-receives. Bell provided 14 kills, six digs and 15 serve-receives. Tauai registered seven kills, two aces, seven digs and nine serve-receives.
Hurst recorded seven digs and 12 serve-receives. Brems recorded 40 assists, two aces and six digs. Garcia added two aces, five digs and 11 serve-receives.
Coach Alise Bowles stated that it was a solid start and noted that while there is work to do, the team is excited to improve and progress through the season.
The Pioneers continue pre-region play with a visit to Herriman on Tuesday, August 18, and a home game against Copper Hills on Thursday, August 20. Varsity contests are scheduled to begin around 6:30 p.m.
