Provo Power is giving away free shade trees to eligible residents this fall through the NatureShade program. These trees are intended to beautify neighborhoods while helping to cool homes, reduce energy costs, protect sidewalks and asphalt, and enhance the local environment.
To qualify for the program, individuals must be Provo residential electric customers with an active account and must not have received a NatureShade tree within the past two years. Applications are accepted online only and will open on September 10, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. Applicants must provide an active email address and should watch for communications from RenewChoice Manager.
Once eligibility is confirmed, participants will receive an email to schedule a pickup time. The trees provided are young saplings approximately 7 feet tall that can fit in a standard vehicle. Trees are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. The current selection of shade trees, chosen by the city forester, includes Hot Wings Tatarian Maple, Princeton Elm, and Red Oak.
Shade trees provide several community benefits, including lowering summer temperatures around homes and reducing energy use. They also help extend the life of roads and sidewalks, improve air quality, capture carbon, and replenish underground aquifers when watered properly.
