A 59-year-old man was taken into custody Friday evening after a standoff at a Bluffdale hotel involving gunfire, according to police reports. Officers originally responded to the WoodSpring Suites on a medical call regarding a reported self-inflicted gunshot wound, but the situation escalated when the suspect produced a firearm during the encounter.
Police Response and Standoff
Bluffdale police officers were dispatched to the WoodSpring Suites, located at 1478 West 14000 South, at approximately 6:43 p.m. on July 24, 2026. The initial dispatch call indicated a medical emergency where a male was reported to have shot himself in a bathroom, Bluffdale Police Lt. Zach Robinson told Gephardt Daily.
Upon entering the man's room to establish contact, officers encountered resistance when the suspect produced a firearm. This led to a brief standoff within the hotel room. During the confrontation, the man fired a round inside the bathroom while officers were present in the vicinity.
Resolution and Lack of Injuries
The confrontation ended after the suspect approached the front door of the hotel room. According to Lt. Robinson, the man presented a revolver around the door with the cylinder open and no rounds remaining in the cylinder. At that point, officers were able to remove the weapon from his hand and take him into custody.
While the initial report suggested a self-inflicted wound, investigators found no one in the room who had been shot. Police confirmed that while a couple of rounds had indeed been fired during the incident, there were no injuries reported within the suite.
Agency Coordination and Safety Checks
Following the arrest, law enforcement conducted a sweep of the hotel to ensure public safety. Officers checked other rooms across all floors of the facility and confirmed that no other parties were injured during the incident, Lt. Robinson reported.
The man was transported to the Salt Lake County jail for booking. The response to the scene involved personnel from multiple nearby agencies who arrived to assist Bluffdale police.
