Two severe thunderstorm warnings and two flash flood warnings were in effect across central and southern Utah on Saturday evening, August 29, 2026, according to a Gephardt Daily report.
The severe thunderstorm warning applied to southwestern San Juan and eastern Kane counties. A thunderstorm was reported 9 miles northwest of Lake Powell, or 42 miles south of Escalante, traveling east at 30 mph.
The National Weather Service stated that the storm could produce 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail. Officials warned that hail damage to vehicles is expected and noted that wind could damage roofs, siding, and trees.
A tornado watch remained in effect for the warned area. While a tornado was not considered immediately likely, officials advised that tornadoes can develop quickly from severe thunderstorms and instructed residents to move to a sturdy structure, such as a basement or small interior room, if a tornado is spotted.
Flash flood warnings were issued for San Juan County and central Kane County, with the alert lasting until at least 10:15 p.m. Saturday.
Affected locations include portions of Warm Creek, Last Chance Creek, and Croton Canyon down to Lake Powell, including areas within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Officials warned that torrential rainfall was occurring and advised against driving vehicles through flooded roadways.
The National Weather Service warned that continuous cloud to ground lightning was occurring with the storm and advised individuals to move indoors immediately.
