Great Salt Lake State Park held a First Day Hike for bird watching earlier this year. The event took place at the Great Salt Lake State Park Visitors Center back patio, where participants met at 8:30 am to begin a walk along Silver Sands Beach.
The hike involved a morning stroll led by a park ranger to discuss birding around the Great Salt Lake. The walking distance covered approximately 1.5 miles under beach conditions.
The event required pre-registration due to a maximum capacity of 50 people. Admission for the hike was $3 per person, in addition to the $5 per vehicle fee required to enter the park.
Participants were advised to dress for the weather and wear waterproof shoes or boots because wet conditions and uneven terrain were possible on the beach. While binoculars were recommended for bird watching, attendees were asked not to bring dogs to the walk to avoid disturbing the birds.
The hike was located at Great Salt Lake State Park, situated off of Exit 104 of I-80. The event was noted as being separate from Antelope Island State Park.
