A 4-year-old girl has died after becoming trapped in a hot vehicle for more than two hours in American Fork, according to a report published August 19. The incident occurred in late July, when the child entered the rear of a vehicle while playing outside with other children.
Authorities reported that the child entered the back of the vehicle without anyone noticing. Because the rear doors had safety locks, the child was unable to open them to exit the car.
When police arrived, they opened the vehicle doors and found interior temperatures of 120 degrees. The child was transported to a hospital in critical condition, where she later passed away.
American Fork Police Lieutenant Ryan Archuleta described the incident as absolutely tragic. As of the report, no criminal charges have been filed in connection with the death.
