Dreamland Safari Tours is marking its 25th anniversary this year, according to a September 30 report. The company, which began with two local four-wheel-drive enthusiasts taking visitors into the Kanab backcountry, is celebrating a quarter-century of operation.
The company was founded in 2001 by David and Marilyn DeVooght as interest grew in scenic tours of the Kanab area. In 2011, William and Meghann James took over the business, expanding offerings over the following nine seasons as outdoor tourism grew in the region.
Current owners Paul Gagner and Sunny Stroeer purchased Dreamland in March 2020. Ten days after the purchase, the company suspended operations due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Stroeer noted that reaching this 25-year milestone offers a different perspective than the company's 20th anniversary, which occurred five years ago during the pandemic.
Stroeer credited the longevity of the business to a consistent approach involving small groups, experienced local guides, and visiting locations that visitors may not be able to reach independently. She stated that the demand for guides who know the landscape deeply and can lead guests safely and respectfully has grown.
Dreamland currently offers various trips throughout Southern Utah and Northern Arizona, ranging from short sightseeing excursions to full-day hikes, overnight camping, and backpacking trips. Stroeer expressed pride that many guides who were with the company when she and Gagner purchased it remain on staff.
Dreamland will host local anniversary celebrations throughout November. Scheduled events include a party on November 7 at Best Friends Mercantile featuring live music and libations. The company is also offering free guided outings to the Mansard Trail and Upper Peekaboo, though the Upper Peekaboo outing is already full. Additionally, there is a giveaway for a Dreamland Stay and Play package for two valued at more than $1,500.
Looking toward the future, Stroeer expressed interest in the value of offline experiences as technology and artificial intelligence increasingly shape daily life. She stated her hope is that the company remains focused on connecting people with one another and the land.
