The Black Canyon Fire has expanded to 2,111 acres with 0% containment, prompting a community meeting in Orangeville on Wednesday to discuss evacuation updates and suppression efforts. The lightning-caused wildfire, which ignited on July 30, 2026, continues to burn in the rugged terrain of the Manti-La Sal National Forest.
Community Meeting Scheduled
A public meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Old Firehouse Community Center, located at 80 N. Main in Orangeville. Local, federal, and state representatives are expected to attend to provide updates on current suppression efforts, anticipated fire behavior, and ongoing weather conditions.
Evacuations and Protection Efforts
The Emery County Sheriff's Office maintains a "GO" evacuation order for the Reeder Subdivision. To protect homes in the area, local structural fire engines are working to reduce fuels and improve defensible space, while bulldozers construct a protective fire line along the north and northeast sides of the subdivision.
Active Fire Behavior
Incident officials report that fire behavior is expected to remain active due to low humidity and forecasted winds. Currently, 183 personnel are working on the fire. Crews are attempting to go direct on the fire edge where possible and are conducting road preparations along Lowry and Reeder Ridge Road.
Expanded Forest Closures
The Manti-La Sal National Forest has issued an expanded temporary closure order for portions of the Ferron Ranger District. The order, which remains in effect through August 31, 2026, was updated on August 3 to include Spring City Canyon Road and FS Road 0014 at Millers Flat.
Closure Details
The closure area encompasses all Forest Service lands in the Ferron Ranger District within Sanpete and Emery Counties located northeast of Reeder Canyon Trail, east of Skyline Drive, south of Potters Canyon Road, and west of Millers Flat Road. This includes the Potters Pond Campground and its associated spur roads.
Road and Trail Restrictions
Additional road and trail closures include Skyline Drive from the intersection with Potters Pond Road to Reeder Ridge Road, the entirety of Reeder Ridge Road, and Forest Road 0038. Other closed routes include Forest Service Roads 2206, 2207, 2209, 2213, 2228, and 2232.
Fire Origins
The Black Canyon Fire was first discovered on July 31, 2026, and was estimated at 50 acres at that time. The fire is located approximately 29 miles southwest of Price, Utah, in the Manti-La Sal National Forest.
