The Lehi boys soccer team concluded its season following a first-round playoff match against No. 17 Herriman on Friday, May 8. Although the Pioneers held a winless record, they earned the right to host the matchup after being ranked No. 16 in the final 6A RPI rankings because of their strength of schedule.
The Pioneers demonstrated skill and determination throughout much of the contest, dominating play for significant portions of the game despite failing to score. Senior midfielder James Lowry led the attack by effectively funneling the ball, while senior midfielders Gavin Richards and Mack Grimley helped keep the team organized and controlled Herriman's penetration into the scoring third.
Lehi's defensive efforts were led by seniors Noah Poulsen, Paxton Bentley, and Marco Miranda, who kept the Mustangs away from the goal approach for most of the first half. Goalkeeper Trey Sherman also made fine saves while contending with strong winds during the first half.
The game's only goal occurred with less than two minutes remaining before the halftime break, when Herriman senior center midfielder Josh Kim scored on a long shot from the right side.
Lehi pressed for an equalizer during the final 15 minutes of the match. Their most significant opportunity arrived late in the game when Poulsen placed a ball into the penalty box for a header by Lowry, which went just wide of the goal.
Despite the loss and a difficult season, the players maintained composure against Herriman's physicality and demonstrated sportsmanship. The graduating seniors were noted for setting a positive example for future players.
