The Environmental and Community Impact Analysis, Draft Document, and Public Review for the Deer Creek Reservoir Trail study are now complete. Following the completion of these steps, a Record of Decision (ROD) has been issued.
The study focused on improving the unpaved trail located west of Deer Creek Reservoir to establish a safe, vehicle-free connection between Heber Valley and Provo Canyon.
UDOT conducted the feasibility study in coordination with several entities, including Wasatch County, Deer Creek State Park, Wasatch Mountain State Park, the Bureau of Reclamation, Heber Valley Historic Railroad, and nearby property owners.
The study investigated options for creating a 7.5-mile paved path between the trailheads at Wasatch Mountain State Park and Deer Creek Dam. Additionally, the research explored methods to maintain an unpaved option for equestrians, mountain bikers, and hikers.
To guide future design and potential construction, the effort utilized updated environmental reviews and a topographic survey.
The Deer Creek Reservoir Trail segment is intended to serve as a key part of the Utah Trail Network, which aims to create a continuous system of paved, shared-use paths for non-motorized travel. This segment would connect Heber Valley and Provo Canyon, helping to complete a major loop of trails spanning the Wasatch Back and Wasatch Front.
Moving from the study phase to a construction project requires the project to be added to the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), receive funding through prioritization, and enter final design and construction phases.
