CommonSpirit Holy Cross Hospital-Davis celebrated the opening of a new eight-bed inpatient pediatric unit on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026. Officials at the Layton hospital held a ribbon-cutting ceremony involving area firefighters and children in superhero costumes to mark the establishment of the unit.
The new unit provides 24-7 in-house pediatric specialists to treat low-acuity patients. According to CommonSpirit Holy Cross Hospital-Davis President Kyle Brostrom, the facility is designed to assist children needing extra help with illnesses such as the flu, asthma exacerbations, infections, or other respiratory issues. The hospital noted that approximately 30% of emergency room patients are pediatric patients, many of whom previously required transfers to Salt Lake for inpatient care.
The pediatric unit is overseen by pediatric hospitalists Dr. Adam Farmer and Dr. Ryan Ericksen. Brostrom credited the Tanner Clinic, which employs the two hospitalists, as an invaluable partner in making the unit possible. The hospital president noted that the ability to keep care close to home provides logistical comfort to families and addresses a significant need in Davis County.
The hospital previously hosted a pediatric unit until 2019, when the space was renovated for adult surgical care. The hospital, which formerly operated as Davis Hospital and Medical Center, recognized a growing need for dedicated inpatient pediatrics in Davis County two years ago.
