Ranger-led tours are being offered at Great Salt Lake State Park to view rare Mirabilite Formations. These salt mineral deposits can only be seen during specific winter conditions, and the duration of the formations this year is unknown.
The tours involve a walk of just under one-half mile along Silver Sands Beach. Participants meet on the back deck of the Visitors Center, located at the Great Salt Lake Marina in Magna, which is accessible via Exit 104 off of I-80. The event is not located on Antelope Island.
Tours are scheduled to occur from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the hour. The walk is expected to take between 30 and 45 minutes. Participants are encouraged to wear waterproof shoes, as conditions are typically wet and ice may be encountered on the beach. The event may be canceled if snowy weather blocks visibility of the formations.
The cost for the tour is $3 per person, in addition to the $10 per vehicle entry fee. Dogs are permitted but must be kept on a leash. For more information, the Great Salt Lake State Park Visitor Center can be reached at 801-828-0787.
