Portuguese Dual Language Immersion (DLI) students at Bluffdale Elementary celebrated Brazilian Independence Day with song and dance, according to a September 4 report from Jordan School District.
The students performed traditional songs in Portuguese to honor Dia da Independência, also known as Sete de Setembro.
This Brazilian national holiday commemorates September 7, 1822, when Brazil declared independence from the United Kingdom of Portugal.
Dressed in Brazilian soccer jerseys and specially decorated hats, the students participated in a festive day focused on Brazil's history, culture, and language.
Students in Jordan School District's DLI programs spend half of their school day learning in a second language. The program begins in first grade and continues through twelfth grade, with university classes available at the high school level.
