The Timpanogos School Board is addressing declining enrollment in Lindon, Pleasant Grove, Orem, and Vineyard, which may necessitate the closure or reconfiguration of ten elementary and three junior high schools. According to a report published August 26, district officials met Wednesday evening to confirm the specific schools on the list and the reasoning behind these potential changes.
District officials stated the goal is to make schools more robust and ensure students have access to educational opportunities and support structures without raising taxes. Timpanogos School District Communications Director Tyler Vigue said the district is looking at the whole system to determine where changes can be made.
While the process has been emotional for parents and board members, some community members have expressed support for an evidence-based approach. Jacob Perazzo, a teacher and parent in Pleasant Grove, stated he is comfortable with potential reconfigurations if they are conducted thoroughly and thoughtfully.
District officials emphasized that the potential changes are not an indictment of any school's performance but are intended to create the best possible learning experience for students and families. The board has passed measures to potentially change school boundaries across the district and has 90 days to develop a plan, with more information expected by the end of the year.
