The Payson Fire has been renamed the Peteetneet Fire, according to a September 6 statement from Utah Fire Info. The new name follows the proximity of Peteetneet Creek, which is named for Timpanogos Ute Leader Chief Peteetneet.
The fire has been GPS mapped at 45 acres and remains 0% contained. According to the report, the fire is burning in brush and rough terrain.
Crews made progress during the evening of September 6. Additional ground and air resources were assigned to the area for the following day. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Officials requested that people avoid the area to allow firefighters sufficient room to work safely.
