Kings for a Day: Fourth Graders Explore the Middle AgesOrchard Hills ElementarySeptember 18, 2026Our fourth graders have been journeying back in time through their latest reading unit on Empires of the Middle Ages, discovering what life was really like for people of the medieval world. As part of their studies, students have been learning about the dramatic differences in daily life between the privileged class—kings and queens who enjoyed wealth, power, and luxury—and the serfs, who worked long, hard lives serving the land. To bring the lesson to life, Mrs. Andersen's students got to be kings for a day, proudly sporting their own crowns in class as they imagined royal feasts, castles, and thrones. This experience helped students connect with history in a memorable way, sparking great conversations about fairness, social class, and how much the world has changed since medieval times.
