Two Davis School District employees received a $5,000 donation from the Homes for Heroes Foundation to assist them through difficult circumstances, according to a report published August 31.
Jay Flynn, the Foundation Director of the Homes for Heroes Foundation, traveled from North Carolina to present the funds at Farmington Junior High School.
The donation was split equally between two employees, with Farmington Junior High School resource officer Kellie Varela and special education bus driver Sarah Lowder each receiving $2,500.
Varela was selected for the assistance after a series of unexpected emergencies resulted in a growing stack of bills. Lowder recently lost everything in a house fire.
The Davis Education Foundation typically uses donations to support the lives of Davis School District students, though donors may designate gifts for other purposes. A contribution that directly benefits employees is considered extremely rare for the foundation.
Founded after 9/11, the Homes for Heroes Foundation has a mission of giving back to community servants, including teachers, military members, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and health care professionals.
