The Southern Utah University College of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) announced several faculty accomplishments and organizational updates in its Summer 2023 newsletter. The update included the introduction of new advisory council members and recognition for specialized professional certifications among the faculty.
David and Jennifer Oberhelman have joined the HSS Advisory Council. Residing in Mesquite, Nevada, the pair spends significant time in Cedar City, Utah. David is a Southern Utah University alumnus, while Jennifer is a retired Executive Assistant from the university.
Associate Professor Dr. Michelle Grimes, specializing in Child Clinical Psychology, has received American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) certification in Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. The SUU Department of Psychology now hosts the only two ABPP certified Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychologists in the state of Utah.
Assistant Professor Dr. Jo Ann Bartley hosted a Summer Institute on Substance Use, Ethics, and Culture. The three-day event, which drew 129 registered participants, covered topics such as rural mental health, telemedicine, and opioids' effects on Native American tribes. The institute included presenters from Alaska, Arizona, and Utah.
The newsletter also highlighted various alumni successes, including Ryan Lofthouse, who earned a Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine degree; Lisa Livingston, a Kane County School Board Member; Kelly VanArsdol, a Senior Pastor in Washington; and Jacob Thompson, a translator for Melaleuca.
