The Kanab City Fire Department prevented a backyard fire from spreading to nearby residences on Sunday afternoon, July 5. The incident occurred in the Cottonwood neighborhood behind the Travelodge.
The fire burned trees, brush, and other combustible materials in a backyard area located near South 410 East and East 400 South. Firefighters brought the blaze under control before any homes or other structures were damaged, and no injuries were reported.
Fire Chief Brett Pierson credited firefighters with getting water on the fire quickly, which helped limit its spread despite heavy vegetation and mature trees in the area. Pierson stated that the fire crews did a great job and were able to knock the fire back.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. While investigators have not reached a final determination, Pierson said it is very unlikely that fireworks were responsible.
Pierson thanked the Kanab Police Department, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office for assisting with traffic control, and the responding volunteer firefighters. Because the Kanab City Fire Department is primarily staffed by volunteers, Pierson encouraged residents interested in joining to contact the fire station or Kanab City offices.
