The car show, which is organized as a 501(c)(3) charitable event, brings together classic vehicle enthusiasts and community members for a day of festivities. According to the West Bountiful Car Show organizers, the event is designed to be family-friendly, featuring food trucks and various vendors. Some vendors have committed to donating their proceeds back to the event to assist in passing funds to the cause.
A Family Mission
The motivation behind the event stems from the personal struggles of the Hughes family. Bryan McCurdy, vice president of Marketing, Business Development, Human Resources & Risk Management for Hughes General Contractors, stated that the family's father faced the challenges of Alzheimer's and dementia. McCurdy noted that during that process, the family struggled to find a dedicated place to seek answers regarding the disease.
Addressing Disease Awareness
McCurdy explained that the lack of available information makes it difficult for families to protect loved ones from being taken advantage of, whether mentally, physically, or financially. Because the disease cannot be cured and medication may only slow its progression, the family decided to start a foundation to fund better research and increase community awareness. The Hughes family has also begun directing resources toward the Alzheimer's Association and research initiatives within Utah.
Event Logistics and Participation
The event is expected to feature close to 250 entries, including a variety of motorized vehicles. While the show is free for the public to attend, organizers do charge registration fees for vehicles to support the cause. According to the West Bountiful Car Show, all registration fees are considered donations and will be used for charitable purposes even in the event of a cancellation.
Schedule of Activities
The schedule for the Aug. 1 event includes several key milestones. Registration and setup for participants began at 8 a.m., with the car show officially starting at 10 a.m. The general raffle drawing is scheduled for noon, followed by the judging period between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. The People's Choice ballots are due at noon, with the awards ceremony set for 1:30 p.m. The deluxe raffle and the People's Choice award announcement are slated for 2:15 p.m.
Supporting the Cause
To drive additional fundraising, the event includes various raffle opportunities. Past and current prizes have included a trip to Hawaii and a razor. According to organizers, participants must be present to win all prizes, with the exception of the deluxe raffle drawings. The event serves as a local effort to ensure families have access to quality information and resources regarding dementia.
