Intermountain Health is planning a new home for LDS Hospital at 745 South State Street in Salt Lake City, according to a September 4 report. The project would relocate the hospital from its longtime Avenues location to the former Sears property to provide closer access to major freeways and public transit.
The proposed campus is designed to include a 10-story, 521,000-square-foot hospital alongside an attached seven-story medical office building. The site plans also feature a public plaza to serve as an outdoor gathering area between Main Street and State Street.
Intended to address changing healthcare needs, the facility would provide a central location for services including emergency and intensive care, women’s and newborn services, behavioral health, cancer care, orthopedics, imaging, surgery, and other specialty programs. The design aims to incorporate flexible treatment areas, updated technology, an atrium, and quiet areas for patients, families, and caregivers, while prioritizing energy and water efficiency.
Intermountain Health estimates the hospital will support approximately 2,000 jobs and contribute more than $1.1 billion to the local economy annually. The development would bring activity to a property that has been vacant since the Sears store closed in 2018.
Pending final approvals, Intermountain Health hopes to begin construction before the end of 2026, with the building process expected to take between three and five years.
LDS Hospital has served Utah families since 1905. The current Avenues hospital will remain open during the development of the new campus, and Intermountain Health has not yet decided how the existing property will be utilized following the move.
