Southern Utah University released its Fall 2026 pricing for its aviation programs on Wednesday, outlining costs for helicopter, fixed-wing airplane, and aircraft maintenance technician training. The university reported that more than 90% of its bachelor's degree graduates are currently working as paid pilots in their respective fields.
Helicopter Training Costs
The helicopter program, or rotor-wing training, requires a significant investment across five semesters. According to SUU, the first semester costs $28,000 and includes 35 flight hours for a solo pilot. The second semester is priced at $27,500 for 35 flight hours toward a private pilot certification. In the third semester, the cost rises to $40,000 for 55 flight hours, which includes 10 hours of night vision goggles (NVG) training. The fourth semester is the most expensive at $55,000, covering 50 flight hours that include 15 turbine engine hours. The final semester includes $13,000 for Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) training with 15 flight hours and $9,000 for Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII) training with 10 flight hours. These lab fees cover fuel and instructor fees but do not include university tuition costs.
Specialized Rotor-Wing Skills
Students in the rotor-wing program gain specialized skills including mountain flight navigation, night vision operations, long line operations for carrying external loads, and turbine engine operation. The university noted that its training is designed to prepare students for high-paying jobs, citing a 2018 Boeing study that predicted a deficit of 47,000 helicopter pilots by 2036. SUU stated that its students are currently employed at more than 40 top helicopter companies in the United States, such as Air Methods and Maverick Helicopters.
Fixed-Wing Program Breakdown
The fixed-wing airplane program spans eight semesters of pricing. The first semester is priced at $12,500 for 26 single-engine land (SEL) solo flight hours. The second semester costs $16,000 for 34 SEL flight hours toward a private pilot certification. The third semester is $18,000 for 36 SEL flight hours and 14 simulator hours for instrument training. The fourth semester requires $21,000 for 52.5 SEL flight hours and 17.5 simulator hours for Commercial Phase I. The fifth semester is $18,000 for 43.5 SEL flight hours and 6.5 simulator hours for Commercial Phase II. Specialized training continues with a $10,000 multi-engine land (MEL) commercial add-on in the sixth semester, $11,000 for CFI training in the seventh, and $5,500 for CFII training in the eighth semester. These lab fees, which cover fuel and instructors, do not include tuition.
Airplane Pilot ROI and Outlook
SUU highlights a high return on investment for airplane pilots, stating that for every $1 spent on education, fixed-wing pilots make approximately $55. The university compared this to other professions, noting that lawyers typically earn $30 for every $1 spent on education and doctors earn $36. The university also noted a projected increase in the number of commercial airplane pilots to 635,000 by 2036, according to a 2018 Boeing study. Like the helicopter program, the fixed-wing curriculum includes training for private certification, instrument ratings, commercial ratings, and instructor certifications through both CFI and CFII tracks.
Maintenance Technician Training
The Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT) program focuses on airframe and powerplant training. The program includes instruction in Airframe 1 and 2, Powerplant 1 and 2, and general university courses. Students are prepared to earn A&P Licenses and gain knowledge in avionics, navigation, communication, and safety systems. The curriculum also includes helicopter maintenance experience. Pricing for the AMT program is structured across five semesters of lab costs. Semester 1 costs $4,100, including AMT General Intro, General 1, and General 2. Semester 2 costs $6,000 for Airframe 1 through 3. Semester 3 costs $5,900 for Airframe 4 through 6. Semester 4 costs $3,300 for Powerplant 1 and 2. The final semester, Semester 5, costs $4,200 for Powerplant 3. These lab fees do not include tuition, university fees, or books.
Maintenance Technician Demand
The demand for maintenance technicians is expected to grow significantly. According to studies by Boeing and HAI, there is high demand for these technicians, with Boeing predicting a need for 739,000 new maintenance technicians worldwide between 2020 and 2039. SUU's AMT program is designed to meet these needs and includes an up-to-date curriculum based on recently passed FAA regulations.
Student Resources and Veteran Benefits
SUU noted that students in all aviation programs can utilize various resources, including an accredited degree with over 100 years of history, free tutoring, writing centers, academic advising, and career counseling. For veterans, the university stated that the Post-9/11 GI Bill can cover the full cost of flight fees and tuition for qualifying students, and most veterans also qualify for Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH). SUU is noted as one of the few flight schools that accepts full Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits. Students are also responsible for costs including FAA medical exams, which typically range from $80 to $120, books, supplies, and flight gear such as headsets and flight computers.
