The Carbon County Sheriff's Merit Commission announced it is compiling a roster of qualified individuals to be selected for future openings for Carbon County Deputy Sheriffs, according to a notice published August 24.
The examination process is designed to test the mental and physical abilities and knowledge of applicants. To be considered for an interview by the Merit Commission, applicants must pass a written aptitude test and a pre-POST physical fitness test. Those who pass the written aptitude test must achieve a score of at least 70 percent.
Position requirements include being a U.S. citizen and meeting specific age requirements: a minimum of 19 years of age for Corrections and 21 years of age for Road. Selected applicants must reside in Carbon County or relocate within one year of being hired.
Starting wages for these positions are set at $26.49 per hour, increasing to $28.77 per hour following a one-year probationary period. Additional credit for years of service may be applied based on an individual's experience and qualifications.
Disqualifying factors for the examination include convictions for any felony, Class A Misdemeanor, domestic violence, or a Class B Misdemeanor DUI within the last five years. Any criminal offense involving moral turpitude or that is deemed inimical to public service will also result in disqualification.
Job descriptions for Corrections Officers and Deputy Sheriffs require a high school diploma or GED equivalent and a valid Utah Driver’s License with a clean driving record. Candidates must also undergo physical and psychological examinations, drug screenings, and thorough background checks.
