Meta has announced a major expansion of its Eagle Mountain Data Center in Utah, representing a total investment of more than $3 billion, according to a September 15 report. The project is expected to employ more than 1,200 construction workers and will eventually support 300 permanent employees.
The expansion includes significant community investments, including a $700,000 total contribution to the Walden Park Astronomy Park. Meta is also investing $600,000 to purchase three acres for a future elementary school partnership with the Lake Mountain School District. Additionally, the company is donating $1.5 million to the Lake Mountain Education Foundation and has committed to providing $50,000 annually to support student learning programs, specifically focusing on early childhood literacy.
In terms of local infrastructure and housing, Meta has spent more than $50 million on improvements to roads and water infrastructure. The company has also contributed $4.85 million to the Eagle Mountain City’s Affordable Housing Fund, which has provided mortgage assistance to 66 local families. To date, Meta has contributed over $6.2 million to various local organizations and schools throughout Eagle Mountain.
The data center project utilizes water-efficient closed-loop liquid cooling and dry cooling systems that do not use water during operation. Meta is working on water restoration initiatives, such as the Provo River and Hobble Creek flow restorations, which aim to restore more than 726 million gallons of water per year. The company has set a goal to become water positive by 2030 by restoring more water than it uses globally.
The project's electricity consumption is matched with 100% clean and renewable energy. Meta has installed more than 1.7 gigawatts of clean and renewable energy across 13 locations in Utah.
